Are there times when the waiting period can be waived?

Waiting periods, in some cases, can be waived. Here are a few scenarios to explain this:

  • If you replace your existing policy, for the same amount of cover, and the same people insured and you have passed your waiting period under your previous policy, within 30 days after cancelling your old policy, there will be no waiting period on your Zazu policy. That’s good news! You don’t have to undergo a NEW waiting period for natural death with us, if you replace your existing funeral policy with one of ours, provided that it’s done within 30 days after cancelling your old policy.
  • If you add new lives to your Zazu policy that were not insured under your previous policy, our waiting period will apply to the new people insured only. Example: You had a member-only plan covering yourself with insurer X for R50 000, and you have passed their waiting period. You would now like to replace that with our excellent Zazu Djembe Immediate Funeral Plan, which will cover you, your spouse and 6 children. There will be no waiting period for you, but the 4-month waiting period will apply to your spouse and children because they were not covered under your old policy.
  • If you take more cover with ZAZU than what your previous policy provided, and you have passed your waiting period under your old policy, your new Zazu policy will only have a waiting period in respect of the increased cover. Example: You had R10 000 cover with Insurer X, and you have passed the waiting period. You now decide to take R30 000 cover with ZAZU. There will be no waiting period for the first R10 000, but the 4-month waiting period will apply to the remaining R20 000 cover.
  • If you have passed a part of your waiting period with your previous insurer, that part will be taken off your waiting period, or carried over, to your ZAZU policy. Example: You were covered for R10 000 with Insurer X, and you have passed 1 month of their 6-month waiting period. When you decide to replace the old policy with our Immediate Dependant Plan,  we will carry over the one month you have already served under your old policy, which means that your waiting period will only be 3 months with ZAZU. (4 months total waiting period, less one month served at previous insurer = 3 months waiting period remaining). Suicide is however excluded and the full 12-month (and 12 paid premiums) waiting period will apply when moving from another insurer.

We will require proof of the previous policy, and that the waiting period was passed under the old policy to allow us to waive any waiting period. Historical policy schedules, premium receipts, proof of premium payments, and other documents can be sent to compliance@zazulife.co.za.
